SN Jayaram, IAS, First Mega Health Camp of Karnataka Flaged

BELLARY Aug. 6. The Union Minister for Health, Sushma Swaraj, will inaugurate an arogya mela at the Municipal School Ground here on Saturday, according to the Deputy Commissioner, S.N. Jayaram. This is the 45th mega health camp in the country and the first in the State.

Mr. Jayaram told presspersons here on Tuesday that the three-day camp, sponsored by the Union and the State governments, was earlier planned at Kurgodu, 30 km. from here, but the venue was shifted later for the convenience of rural people. Experts in various super-specialities from the Kidwai Institute of Oncology, the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology, NIMHANS, all in Bangalore, and the Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences here would examine the patients. 

Around 200 doctors and about 500 volunteers had been drafted for the camp. He said x-ray and ECG machines, and ultrasound scanners would be installed and a fully equipped laboratory set up at the campsite. Patients would be given one course of medicine free.

Those needing spectacles would also get them free. Medicines were being brought from Delhi and Bangalore. Local purchases were also being made. Patients needing cataract and family planning operations would undergo it at the VIMS Hospital. If necessary, patients would be referred to major hospitals.

He said a health exhibition would also be organised during the camp. Films on various aspects of health and hygiene would be screened. The exhibition would be open for students and the public on Saturday and Sunday. A two-day training would be given to junior health workers from Bellary, Koppal, Chitradurga, and Davangere during the camp at the Joladarashi Doddana Gowda Rangamandir. He said Ms. Swaraj would be requested to take steps to convert the VIMS Hopsital to a super-speciality hospital. In addition, she would also be requested to sanction two trauma care centres at Mariyammanahalli or Kudligi on National Highway 13 and another one at Bellary on National Highway 63, he added. 

The Minister for Health, Kagodu Thimmappa, and the Minister for Medical Education, A.B. Maalakaraddy, will participate in the inaugural function. Ms. Swaraj will inaugurate the maternity centre at Cowl Bazar, set up under the Reproduction and Child Health Scheme at an estimated cost of Rs. 24 lakh. Cultural programmes by the Song and Drama Division of the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Department of Kannada and Culture will be organised every evening during the camp.
